Ende Dezember bis Anfang Januar auf Madeira – gut eine Woche auf einer portugiesischen Atlantikinsel, einige hundert Kilometer nördlich der Kanaren. Das milde Klima des Nordostpassats beschert Madeira das ganze Jahr über Temperaturen zwischen 15 und 30 °C; an der Nordseite regnet es öfter, im Süden ist es trockener.
Ekkehard Kutz von der Verleihstation Magoscar übergab uns die vorbestellten BMWs in erstklassigem Zustand – eine R1100GS und eine R1100R, der wir die F650 vorzogen. Untergebracht waren wir im Rustico, unweit der Verleihstation, das vor allem durch seine reichhaltige Küche überzeugte.
Die Straßen auf Madeira sind stellenweise spektakulär durch die zerklüftete Vulkanlandschaft geführt und sehr kurvig. Die fast 2.000 m hohen Berge, die Levada-Bewässerungskanäle mit ihren Wanderwegen und das türkisgrüne Meer machen die Insel zu einem klassischen Motorrad-Urlaubsziel – kein Strandulaub, aber ideal zum Entspannen, gut Essen und Erkunden. Late December to early January on Madeira – just over a week on a Portuguese Atlantic island a few hundred kilometres north of the Canaries. The mild north-east trade wind climate gives Madeira temperatures of 15 to 30 °C year-round; the northern slopes see more rain, the south is drier.
Ekkehard Kutz of the Magoscar hire station handed over our pre-booked BMWs in first-class condition – an R1100GS and an R1100R, which we chose over the F650. We stayed at the Rustico guesthouse nearby, which impressed above all with its generous and varied cooking.
The roads on Madeira are sometimes spectacularly routed through the rugged volcanic landscape and very winding. The nearly 2,000 m mountains, the levada irrigation canals with their walking paths and the turquoise sea make the island a classic motorcycle holiday destination – no beach holiday, but ideal for relaxing, eating well and exploring. All 144 photographs shown here are scans of the medium-format slides from that time.
