Zwei Wochen April 2000 auf einer gemieteten BMW R1100GS (Susanne Siess de Barbosa, Cuernavaca): 4.900 km durch die interessantesten Gegenden Mexikos. Die Route führte zunächst südwärts zwischen Popocatépetl (5.200 m) und seiner Schwester über eine 3.700 m hohe Piste nach Puebla und dann an die Golfküste.
Von der Küste durch Villahermosa nach Palenque – unter dichtem tropischen Regenwald verbergen sich fantastische Maya-Tempel. Weiter nach Süden zu den Stromschnellen von Agua Azul, nach San Cristóbal in Chiapas mit seinen bunten Indigena-Märkten, an die Pazifik-Küste nach Puerto Escondido. Eine extrem kurvige Regenwaldstraße durch Vegetationszonen bis 2.700 m höhe führt nach Oaxaca mit seinen prächtigen Kolonialbauten und dem Ausgrabungsfeld Monte Albán auf dem abgeflachten Bergkegel darüber.
Auf Schotterpisten bis auf 4.075 m zum Kratersee des Vulkán Nevada de Toluca (ca. 4.800 m), vorbei an Valle Bravo, Morelia, dem Patzcuaro-See, durch das herrliche Guanajuato bis hinein nach Mexico City mit seinen 20 Millionen Einwohnern, infernalischem Lärm und Smog. Kurz davor noch Tula mit den riesigen Stein-Atlanten und Teotihuacán mit seinen ägyptisch anmutenden Riesenpyramiden. Ein einziger Farbrausch, ein Reiseland der Superlative.
Two weeks in April 2000 on a hired BMW R1100GS (Susanne Siess de Barbosa, Cuernavaca): 4,900 km through the most interesting regions of Mexico. The route headed first south between Popocatépetl (5,200 m) and its sister volcano over a 3,700 m-high track to Puebla, then down to the Gulf coast.
From the coast through Villahermosa to Palenque – under dense tropical rainforest lie fantastic Maya temples. Further south to the rapids of Agua Azul, to San Cristóbal in Chiapas with its colourful indigenous markets, and on to the Pacific coast at Puerto Escondido. An extremely winding rainforest road through vegetation zones up to 2,700 m leads to Oaxaca with its magnificent colonial buildings and the hilltop ceremonial site of Monte Albán.
Gravel tracks up to 4,075 m to the crater lake of Volcán Nevada de Toluca (approx. 4,800 m), past Valle Bravo, Morelia and the Pátzcuaro lake, through beautiful Guanajuato and into Mexico City with its 20 million inhabitants, infernal noise and smog. Just before: Tula with its giant stone Atlantes, and Teotihuacán with its pyramid complex as monumental as anything in Egypt. A riot of colour, a travel destination of superlatives.
