Die Reise fand Ende August bis Anfang September 1997 statt – gut zwei Wochen auf der Insel. Die Anreise erfolgte mit dem Autoreisezug von Passau nach Hamburg, von dort mit der Fähre der Scandinavian Seaways nach Newcastle. Von der schottischen Grenze war es dann nur noch etwa eine Stunde. Auf der Rückfahrt ging es über Newcastle nach Amsterdam, weil die direkte Hamburger Linie Ende September nicht mehr bedient wird.
Schottland ist landschaftlich außerordentlich reizvoll – von lieblich bis wild und herb. Die Unterkünfte in den privaten B&Bs (Bed and Breakfast) lagen zwischen 12 und 20 Pfund pro Kopf inklusive Frühstück. Die Straßen in den Highlands und im Norden sind oft einspurig und kurvig, Endurofahrerei ist möglich, aber nicht erforderlich. Die Route verlief von Newcastle über Edinburgh in die Highlands nach Osten, mit vielen imposanten Castles, dann weiter nach Norden mit zwei Tagen auf den wunderbaren Orkney-Inseln.
Von den Orkneys gegen den Uhrzeigersinn an die wilde Westküste, die durch ihren ständigen Wetterwechsel fasziniert. Die Route führte weiter über die spektakuläre Applecross-Straße zur Insel Skye, dann südwarts entlang der Küste, vorbei an Oban und Glasgow in die Lowlands – mit ruhigem Wetter und eigenem Reiz. Ein Abstecher in den Lake District folgte, bevor es wieder per Fähre nach Hause ging. Alle 264 Bilder sind Scans der Kleinbild-Dias aus dieser Tour.
The tour ran from late August to early September 1997 – just over two weeks on the island. The journey out went by car-sleeper train from Passau to Hamburg, then by Scandinavian Seaways ferry to Newcastle. From the Scottish border it was about another hour's ride. On the way back the route ran Newcastle–Amsterdam, as the direct Hamburg service had already ended for the season.
Scotland is scenically exceptional – from gentle and pastoral to wild and austere. Accommodation in private B&Bs ran between 12 and 20 pounds per person including breakfast. Roads in the Highlands and the far north are often single-track and winding; off-road riding is possible but not necessary. The route led from Newcastle through Edinburgh and eastward into the Highlands, past numerous imposing castles, then north to the Orkney Islands for two days.
From Orkney the tour continued counter-clockwise down the wild west coast, where the constantly shifting weather creates a moody atmosphere. The spectacular Applecross road led to the Isle of Skye, then south along the coast past Oban and Glasgow into the Lowlands – quieter riding with its own distinct appeal. A detour through the Lake District rounded off the trip before the ferry home. All 264 photographs here are scans of the 35 mm slides from this tour.
